Anna Mathebula's journey to work
Anna Mathebula lives in Mamelodi and works as a domestic worker in the east of Pretoria. She has to wake up at 04.30 every morning to catch two buses to her place of work 35 km from her home. The journey that should not take longer than 25min takes her around three hours on average.
For me personally this was a massive eye opener.
Anna drinks her medicine before getting ready to start her day at 05.00.
By now she has already showered and gotten dressed.
Anna in her small one room house in Mamelodi.
Anna puts on warm clothes to brave to cold winter morning.
Anna leaves home at 05:20
Streets in the area are very dark and deserted.
The first bus is stopped a couple of blocks from Anna's home.
A man sings and plays an accordion on the first bus to lift the commuters spirits.
Each bus had to be escorted by a police vehicle because of the taxi strike in Mamelodi.
Commuters stand in ques for a second bus to take them from Mamelodi to Pretoria east.
The buses were running late and people stood for almost an hour in the cold waiting.
After almost two hours Anna is on her second bus and finally leaving Mamelodi.
Almost three hours later Anna arrives at work.
